The Cultural Caravan is bringing the school to life!
On Tuesday 17th, as part of Black History Month, the People of Motherland team transformed Notre-Dame de la Jeunesse School into a vibrant hub of art and culture. A total of 240 pupils, from nursery to Year 6, immersed themselves in African traditions during a memorable day.
An immersion into the heart of cultural heritage: The experience began with a fascinating exhibition of cultural artefacts. Rather than simply observing the items, the pupils explored the deeper meaning behind each piece: the symbolism of the loincloths and masks, the history of the decorative objects, and the practical uses of everyday tools. Mr Ange M. brilliantly facilitated this interactive session, captivating the young people with his passionate explanations.
Education through oral tradition: The journey continued with Reine Affoué, who captivated her audience with a powerful tale. She wisely conveyed the importance of unity, mutual support and the strength of the collective. The result: pupils who were curious, attentive and deeply engaged in this transmission of values.
From tradition to modernity: A short film about Africa’s major cities illustrated the transition from tradition to modernity in order to challenge preconceptions.
Between rhythm and creativity: The energy levels went up a notch with a series of concurrent workshops:
- Creative activities: In the classrooms, pupils explored their talents through inspired art projects.
- The Flavours Workshop: The famous Bofloto. The sensory experience came to a close in the kitchen! The pupils got stuck in by helping to make bofloto (African fritters). They tucked into these treats with great enthusiasm, discovering a delicious and convivial aspect of our culinary heritage.
- As for the atmosphere: An electrifying vibe filled the school to the sound of drums. The energy was palpable; teachers joined the children in celebrating amidst a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
A resounding success and a shared sense of pride: The headteacher, who was extremely proud of this initiative, warmly thanked the team for this wonderful and highly educational celebration. The day will be remembered as one marked by unity, identity, cultural pride and community spirit.
